What Happened
Late Friday, a fire erupted at a building in London's Hendon neighborhood, which previously housed the Jewish Futures education organization. According to the Metropolitan Police, officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 10:30 p.m. after a man was observed approaching a row of shops while carrying a plastic bag. He deposited the bag near the building and attempted to light the contents.
Upon inspection, the bag was found to contain three bottles filled with fluid. However, the attempted ignition was unsuccessful, and the man subsequently fled the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. Signs for Jewish Futures were still visible on the building. The Community Security Trust confirmed the fire caused minimal damage to a nearby doorway. The police have increased their presence in the area to provide reassurance to the community.
We are aware of what appears to be another attempted arson, this time targeting a premises in north London previously used by the Jewish community.

Just days prior, two individuals were apprehended in connection with an arson attack on a synagogue in North London. These incidents raise concerns about the safety and security of the Jewish community in London and highlight the potential for escalating tensions.

While authorities are investigating the motivations behind these attacks, they underscore the need for vigilance and emphasize the importance of reporting any suspicious activity. Helen Flanagan, from the Metropolitan Police's counterterrorism unit, stated that while the Hendon attack is not currently linked to other incidents in Northwest London, her unit is leading the investigation due to the similarities between the attacks. The investigation will focus on identifying the perpetrator, determining the motive behind the arson attempt, and exploring any potential links to extremist groups or ideologies. Police have yet to name any suspects in the latest arson attack, and are asking for the Public’s help with any information they may have.
In a separate incident, a burning object was thrown towards the offices of Iran International, a Persian media outlet critical of Iran's leadership. While a little-known group with ties to Iran has claimed responsibility for some of the attacks, including those on the synagogue and ambulances, police are still investigating all possibilities. The investigation will need to determine how many different individuals or groups may be involved. The community can expect to see a heightened law enforcement presence in the area as police work to reassure residents and prevent further incidents.
